Abstract

A nebulizerparticularly for home use includes a housinghaving an aerosol generatormounted therein. The housing is closed by a hinged capand has an outletthrough which aerosol generated by the generatoris delivered. A suitable connector such as a mouthpiecemay be connected to the outlet. The housinghas a receiver for receiving a nebule. The receiver includes a slotwhich is sized and/or shaped to accommodate only a nebuleof predetermined shape and/or size. The nebulizer caphas a nebule opening device which may be in the form of a puncture pinprojecting therefrom to pierce the nebulewhen the cap is moved to the closed position. The pinis hollow or splined to regulate flow from the nebule. The nebulizeralso has a switch device for enabling operation of the aerosol generatorwhen the nebuleis opened. The switch device comprises a microswitchon the housing which is engageable by a triggeron the capwhen the cap is moved to the closed position. Aerosol generated by the aerosol generatoris delivered into a chamber defined by the nebulizer housing. Air passes into the chamber through air inlets. The air entrains the aerosolized medicament and the entrained aerosolized medicament is delivered from the nebulizer through the outlet
