Abstract
Disclosed is a surface coated member having excellent adhesion resistance and fracture resistance. A surface coated member () comprises a coating layer () on the surface of a base (). The coating layer () is composed of a multilayer body wherein a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) layer (), a continuously existing intermediate layer () containing titanium, aluminum, carbon and oxygen and having an average film thickness of 5-30 nm, and an α-aluminum oxide (AlO) layer () composed of aluminum oxide (AlO) having an α crystal structure are sequentially formed by deposition.
