Abstract
The subject is to provide a liquid crystal that has a high stability to heat, light and so forth, a wide temperature range of a nematic phase, a small viscosity, a large optical anisotropy and a suitable elastic constant K, and further has a large negative dielectric anisotropy and an excellent compatibility with any other liquid crystal compound. The invention provides the compound (1): wherein, for example, Rand Rare hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 10 carbons, alkenyl having 2 to 10 carbons, alkoxy having 1 to 9 carbons, alkoxyalkyl having 2 to 9 carbons or alkenyloxy having 2 to 9 carbons; when one of the ring A, the ring Aand the ring Ais 1,4-phenylene or 2,3-difluoro-1,4-phenylene, the other two are 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-cyclohexenylene; and Zis a single bond, —(CH)—, —CHO—, —OCH—, —COO— or —OCO—.
