Abstract

An apparatusaccording to the present invention is designed to read and/or write data from/on an information recording mediumusing near-field light. The apparatusincludes: a light sourcefor emitting laser light; a condensing sectionfor producing the near-field light based on the laser light; a detecting sectionfor detecting the relative positions of the condensing sectionand the information recording medium; and a control sectionfor controlling the position of the condensing section. In starting a gap servo operation, the control sectioncontrols the position of the condensing sectionso that the gap servo operation is started at a different location on the information recording mediumfrom any other location where the gap servo operation has ever been started.
