Abstract

A rotary control assembly () for a handheld two-way radio () provides improved tactile feedback in the form of clicks, even during gloved usage. Assembly () includes a housing having a large control knob (), a rotary switch control () having a shaft (), a shaft extender () having a toothed gear element (), and a ball plunger (). As the control knob () is rotated, the shaft extender (), toothed gear element () and shaft (), all turn in cooperation. The toothed gear element () is loaded by the ball plunger thereby generating a clicking tactile feedback in response to the control knob () being rotated. A large control knob (), suitable for a ruggedized environment, can thus be used in conjunction with a small rotary switch control () for improved tactile feedback while maximizing internal space efficiency.
