A check processing device accurately detects if the check storage unit is full. The check storage unitof a check processing devicehas first and second storage pocketsand. A first vertical pressure plateand a second vertical pressure platefor holding the checks conveyed into the storage pocketsandare disposed to the storage pocketsand. The first vertical pressure platesandare displaced according to the total thickness of the checks stored in the storage pocketsand. Using detection mechanismsandhaving an interrupterdisposed to the corresponding first vertical pressure plateand, and a photosensorfor detecting the corresponding interrupter, the total thickness of the checks stored in the storage pocketsandcan be detected, and whether the storage unit is full can be detected from this total check thickness.
