In one aspect of the present disclosure there is provided a method for preparing reticulocyte mimetics. In another aspect of the present disclosure there are provided reticulocyte mimetics obtained using the method. In yet another aspect of the present disclosure there is provided a whole blood reference control including the reticulocyte mimetics as provided.
