Abstract

The present invention is directed to decrease the impact sound of the ratchet mechanism generated at the time of piston retraction. The tensioner includes a pistonslidable in the piston boreof the housingand an expandable circlip memberengageable with the engagement grooveof the piston. The piston borehas a guide grooveformed therein that has front and rear stop surfacesadapted to contact the circlip member. The engagement grooveis formed by a round seat portion Sthat the circlip memberis adapted to seat, a piston-retraction restricting portion SSthat is formed on the front side of the round scat portion Sand a piston-advance permitting portion SSthat is formed on the front side of the round seat portion S. The piston-retraction restricting portion SSpermits the circlip memberto travel a short distance toward the front side along the rear side stop surfaceto allow for an enlargement of the circlip memberand to restrict retraction of the pistonwhen the pistonretracts and the circlip membercontacts the rear side stop surfaceof the guide groove
