A document processing system comprises a pattern generating systemarranged to generate a data encoding pattern, a printerarranged to print a documenthaving the pattern thereon, and a receiverarranged to receive data over a communication link. The pattern generating systemis arranged to generate the patternso as to encode data defining a communication parameter suitable for the transmission of data to the receiverover the link.
