A method for servicing field devices of process automation technology utilizing a device-independent operating program SP running in a computer unit CU and requiring device-specific description files DD-DDfor accessing parameters and/or functions of field devices F-F, wherein the device-specific description files must be processed by a preprocessing program, during run time of the operating program SP, that preprocessing program IPor IPis called, which was successfully tested with the corresponding description file DD-DD
