Abstract

An electrophoretic display device comprises an array of rows and columns of display pixels. Each pixel comprises first and second row electrodes () and first and second column electrodes (). Each row and column electrode has a branch (') so that four overlaps are defined between an electrode and an electrode branch. Between each of the four branch/electrode overlaps, a respective particle reservoir () is located, the respective branch/electrode pair being for controlling movement of particles associated with the respective particle reservoir (). This provides a display design which can be implemented as a passive matrix, requiring only two column electrodes and two row electrodes per pixel with four particles.
