Abstract

A workpiece centering apparatusis provided on a lathe having a spindle, an independent chuck, and upper and lower tool rests, and has sandwiching membersmounted to the tool rests, respectively, and capable of contacting the outer peripheral surface of a workpiece W, and a centering control sectionfor moving the tool restsand thereby moving the sandwiching membersto their respective centering positions which are the positions of the sandwiching memberswhen the center position of a portion to be machined of the workpiece W coincides with the axis of the spindlein a state where the portion to be machined of the workpiece W is being sandwiched and held by the sandwiching members, and then causing the independent chuckto grip the workpiece W.
