Abstract
An encryption apparatus () includes a secure processing system () in the form of an integrated circuit. The secure processing system () includes an on-chip secure memory system (). The secure memory system () includes a non-volatile, read-only, permanent key register () in which a permanent cryptographic key () is stored. The secure memory system () also includes a non-volatile, read-write, erasable key register () in which an erasable cryptographic key () is stored. Symmetric cryptographic operations take place in an encryption engine () using an operating cryptographic key () formed by combining () the permanent and erasable keys (). A tamper detection circuit () detects tampering and erases the erasable key () when a tamper event is detected.
