An exhaust purification system for an internal combustion engine has a hydrogen concentration sensor () disposed upstream of a catalytic converter () in the engine exhaust system to detect a hydrogen concentration in the exhaust gas. An optimum combustion air-fuel ratio is then estimated based on the detected hydrogen concentration.
