A silencer capable of preventing a damage of a metallic layer formed on an inner surface of an external cylinder formed from CFRP, and the external cylinder for the silencer. The silencerincludes the external cylinder, an internal cylinderand an acoustic absorbent (not shown). A posterior endof the external cylinderis detachably provided with a tail cap. An anterior endof the external cylinderis detachably provided with a coupling body. An inner circumferential surface of the posterior endof the external cylinderincludes a posterior covering portionwhile an inner circumferential surface of the anterior endthereof includes an anterior covering portion. This posterior covering portioncovers a posterior end portionof a metallic layerwhile the anterior covering portioncovers an anterior end portionthereof.
