Abstract
An elevator system has a hoistway () and an elevator car () arranged to travel vertically within the hoistway, the hoistway is provided with a sensing arrangement such as an infrared curtain () for detecting the presence of a person on top of the car as the car approaches the top of the hoistway (). The elevator system is arranged to limit further upward movement of the car in the event that a person is detected.
