A method for producing the spark plug () includes providing a projecting portion () on the intermediate member (), and projection-welding the intermediate member () to the ground electrode base material () by means of the projecting portion (), to thereby join the intermediate memberto the ground electrode base material (). Further, the intermediate member () of the spark plug () includes a cylindrical columnar portion () which is joined to the ground electrode chip (), and a flange portion () which is joined to the ground electrode base material () and which flange portion () has a diameter greater than that of the cylindrical columnar portion ().
