Abstract

A membrane-electrode assembly (MEA)has a solid polymer electrolyte membrane. The membranehas ion-conductive domainsand non-ion-conductive domainsand an electrode catalyst. The electrode catalystis present selectively on surface sites of the solid polymer electrolyte membranewhich corresponds to the ion-conductive domainsrather than surface sites of the membranewhich corresponds to the non-ion-conductive domains. A spray liquid containing the electrode catalyst and a solvent is applied onto a surface of the membraneby electrostatic spray deposition to selectively adhere the electrode catalyston the surface sites of the membranewhich corresponds to the ion-conductive domains. The membraneis preferably subjected to a hydrophilization treatment before being sprayed with the spray liquid.
