Abstract

The subject invention provides a wheel assembly () having a spindle () for attachment to a vehicle along a rotational axis (R). An electric motor () is disposed radially about the spindle () and includes a stationary stator () and a rotor () rotatable about the rotational axis (R) relative to the stator (). A rotor support () is disposed about the spindle () and includes a collar () rotatably supported by at least one rotor support bearing () on the spindle (). The rotor support () includes a flange () disposed within a predetermined axial distance (D) and extending radially outward from the collar () to support the rotor (). A planetary gear system () interconnects the rotor support () and a wheel drive () for reducing rotational speed of the rotor () and increasing the torque of the wheel assembly ().
