A holder device () for an article such as a thermocouple () is disclosed. The holder () facilitates the placement and retention of the thermocouple () in an apparatus such as a lyophilizer by clamping the thermocouple () stably in position between adjacent shelves () of the apparatus. The holder () comprises two bearing surfaces () and a housing () extending therebetween. The housing () includes a spring () for biasing the bearing surfaces () apart to retain the holder () between the shelves (). Also provided is a means for retaining a conduit, such as a thermocouple () or other device. The thermocouple retaining means comprises a conductive block () for securely holding within it a sensor end of a thermocouple () and a means is provided for retaining the block () with the thermocouple () in good conductive contact with a surface () of the apparatus. The invention further provides a placement tool () for positioning and removing the holder ().
