Abstract
In a liquid crystal display including a liquid crystal display panel formed by sandwiching a liquid crystal layer between an active matrix substrateand a counter substrate, and a backlight systemthat illuminates the liquid crystal display panel from the active matrix substrate side, an optical sensorfor detecting the intensity of ambient light is provided in a peripheral region of a display regionin a substrate surface of the active matrix substrateon the liquid crystal layer side. The optical sensoris located near the outer edgeof the display regionthat is perpendicular to the direction (X direction) in which the directivity of emitted light of the backlight systemis highest.
