Cationic 2,2,6,6-tetraalkylpiperidinyl alkoxyamines of, for example, formula (1a) and (1b) are useful as polymerization initiators/regulators in a controlled stable free radical polymerization process to produce intercalated and/or exfoliated nanoparticles from natural or synthetic clays.
