An adaptable system () for automatically characterizing a sensor array () in software in response to commands from a user. The system () includes a first mechanism () for acquiring and analyzing image data from the sensor array (). A second mechanism () connected to the first mechanism () obtains parameters specific to the sensor array (). A third mechanism () automatically adjusts the first mechanism () in accordance with the parameters to efficiently accommodate image acquisition and analysis by the first mechanism () from the specific sensor array ().
