Abstract
A fan () has an electronically commutated drive motor (ECM) with a stator () connected to a bearing tube () and a rotor () on a shaft (). The shaft () is journaled in the tube () using passive radial magnetic bearings () to minimize friction and wear, is axially displaceable with respect to the tube (), and is drivingly connected to a rotor magnet () forming a first magnetic yoke (). A second magnetic yoke () is connected to the shaft (), and has an inner surface () defining a substantially cylindrical air gap () through which, during operation, a radial magnetic flux (') extends. A plunger coil () extends into the air gap () and is mechanically connected to the tube () so that, upon axial displacement of the plunger coil (), the position of the shaft () with respect to the tube () changes.
