Abstract

A process and apparatus for applying an optical coating to a substrate, wherein a transition layer, which is used to match mechanical properties of a substrateto mechanical properties of a layer systemto be applied upon the transition layer, is deposited on a front surfaceof the substrate. For this purpose, during a sputtering process carried out in a vacuum chamber, reaction productsare incorporated at least virtually exclusively in the transition layeron the substrate. This prevents other surfaces of the vacuum chamberand the rear sideof the substratefrom being contaminated with the reaction productsand/or their precursors.
