Abstract

A surface-modified precipitated silica, useful as a matting agent, contains the silica having a polymer on a surface thereof. The surface-modified precipitated silica improves the transmission of a clear coating material, having a refractive index of n20=1.4492 and containing 5% by weight of said silica, by at least 20%, in comparison to the same clear coating material containing 5% by weight of a reference precipitated silica surface treated with a polyethylene wax.
