Abstract
A cutting tool having a substrate and a coating layer for coating the surface of the substrate, the coating layer being composed of TiAlWSiM(CN), where M is at least one selected from Nb, Mo, Ta, Hf and Y, 0.45≦a≦0.55, 0.01≦b≦0.1, 0.01≦c≦0.05, 0.01≦d≦0.1, and 0≦x≦1. The cutting tool has excellent wear resistance and fracture resistance. The cutting tool may be further provided with a layer composed of at least one selected from carbides, nitrides and carbonitrides of Al and the elements of the groups 4, 5 and 6 of the periodic table.
