Abstract

A black insertion dimming PWM generation portion () outputs a black insertion PWM pulse VBL to drive a fluorescent lamp () in such a manner that a black insertion period during which the fluorescent lamp () is lit OFF and a light-ON period during which the fluorescent lamp () is lit ON are provided within one vertical period. A luminance dimming PWM generation portion () outputs a dimming PWM pulse Vpwmto PWM-drive the fluorescent lamp () so as to be lit ON and lit OFF repetitively during the light-ON period. An AND circuit () outputs an inverter driving signal Voutgenerated by superimposing the dimming PWM pulse Vpwmand the black insertion PWM pulse VBL. An inverter () drives the fluorescent lamp () by applying a voltage corresponding to the inverter driving signal Voutto the fluorescent lamp ().
