Abstract

The invention intends to provide a liquid crystal display device that, even when a liquid crystal is fixed without completely maintaining a homeotropically aligned state, may effectively inhibit light from leaking. A liquid crystal display deviceincludes: substrates () that oppose to each other with a liquid crystal layercontaining a liquid crystal variable in an aligned state interposed therebetween; and a first polarization plateand a second polarization platedisposed with the opposite substrates interposed therebetween so that their absorption axes are orthogonal to each other, wherein a birefringent layeris formed between the first polarization plateand the second polarization plateby polymerizing a polymerizable liquid crystal, with an optical axis thereof inclined to a thickness direction of the birefringent layer, and the optical axis of the birefringent layeris inclined, with respect to a thickness direction of the birefringent layer, in a direction of an absorption axis of any one of the first polarization plateand the second polarization plate
