Abstract
It is possible to prolong service life of a discharge lamp of hot-cathode type and to reduce a diameter thereof. A discharge lampis provided with an electrode. The electrodehas a heatermade up a coil portion, and a first lead wire portionand a second lead wire portionthat respectively extend from rear ends of this coil portionand applied by an electron emission material. In the electrode, a first lead-in wiresis connected to the first lead wire portionand a second lead-in wiresis connected to the second lead wire portion, so that the coil portionis arranged vertically along the tube axis of the glass tube. The electrodeis also provided a sleevecovering surrounding of the coil portionand having openings in the faces respectively opposite to the forward end and rear end of the coil portion. An open endof the sleeveexceeds a forward end of the coil portion, thereby protecting the coil portion
