Abstract
There are provided a substrate which has solved an unsatisfactory adhesion problem of a seal part in a liquid crystal cell comprising a retardation layer provided on the inner side of the cell, and a liquid crystal cell using the substrate. A color filter substrate includes a substrate, and at least a black matrix layer, a color filter layer, and a retardation layerstacked on the substrate. The black matrix layerand the color filter layerare stacked on the substrate it while providing a margin around the periphery of the substrate. The retardation layeris stacked on the black matrix layerand the color filter layerin a larger area than the area where the black matrix layerand the color filter layerare stacked. The substratein its margin, where neither the black matrix layernor the color filter layeris stacked, is a predetermined seal area.
