Abstract

On a write-once-type recording medium, there are provided: a definite defect management areato definitely record therein defect management information; and a plurality of temporary defect management areasA,B, andC to temporarily record therein the defect management information. If the recording mediumis not yet finalized, every time the defect management information is updated, the updated defect management information is recorded into any one of the plurality of temporary defect management areas. Moreover, a status information recording areais provided on the recording medium, and status information for indicating the temporary defect management area in which there is the defect management information recorded at last is recorded into the status information recording area. By referring to the status information, it is possible to quickly specify the defect management information recorded at last.
