An apparatus including a one-field delay circuitfor delaying a luminance signal Fof a video signal under judgment by an amount of one field; a subtractor circuitfor generating a difference signal FDindicating the difference between a luminance signal Fand the luminance signal Ffor each field; an adder circuit; a one-field delay circuit; a one-field delay circuitfor delaying the difference signal FDby an amount of one field; and a comparison circuitand a judgment circuitfor comparing the difference signals FDand FDand deciding if the luminance signal FDis a film video signal based on the result of the comparison.
