Abstract
Thinning of a planar illumination device using an LED is accelerated while higher and more uniform brightness is promoted. An LEDconstituting the planar illumination device has no lamp house, but a translucent resin that seals an LED chipis exposed. An outline of the translucent resin is formed as a projecting portioncomprising a continuous curved surface. Moreover, on a side end faceopposed to the LEDof a light guide plate, a notch portionfollowing the outline of the projecting portionis formed, and on this notch portion, a prism rowmade of a plurality of unit prisms extending in a direction crossing the light guide plateis formed.
