Abstract

A friction stir welding apparatus () brings end faces () of a plate material (W), having fingers (through) at corners thereof, into abutment against each other to form a hollow cylindrical body (W), and friction-stir-welds the end faces () to each other. The apparatus includes a base (), a first support device and second support device which are mounted on the base (), a support core () spaced from the base () by the first support device and the second support device, for insertion into the hollow cylindrical body (W) and for supporting the hollow cylindrical body (W), and a first gripping member () and a second gripping member () disposed on the support core () for gripping respective protrusions (), which are formed when the fingers (through) are held in abutment against opposite ends of abutting regions of the hollow cylindrical body (W), and which extend along a joining direction. The support core () has passages () defined therein for passage of a cooling medium therethrough.
