Abstract
A variable compression ratio piston () and connecting rod () assembly for an internal combustion engine () includes an eccentric bushing () that carries a piston pin bushing () and contains a journaled portion () held in the rod bore () of the connecting rod (). The eccentric bushing () can be selectively rotated between either of two angle adjusted positions to effect a change in the height of the piston () relative to the connecting rod (), and thus change the compression ratio of the assembly. A latch () mechanism is actuated by oil jets () external to the connecting rod (). The latch () includes bolts () with tapered tips that seat in oblong holes () in a flange plate () to reduce destructive lash. A resilient stop post () bears the brunt of stresses associated with stopping the flange plate () during switching events to protect the latching bolts ().
