Abstract

The disclosed is a light guide unit and a surface illuminator illuminating a liquid crystal display (LCD). The light guide unit () is composed of a surface lighting light guide () having a light emitting major surface () and a light receiving side surface (); a channel light guide () having optical cores () to form a fiber optic channel array having light entrance core surfaces () and light exit core surfaces (); and a distribution light guide () having a light distribution guide surface () and a light receiving portion () receiving light from the LED (). The light guides (and) are positioned respectively in that order to form a light guide unit (). Each width (w) and/or a pitch (p) of the optical cores () may change in accordance with a distance from the light receiving portion (). The channel light guide ()/the distribution light guide () may have a linear shape or a nonlinear shape with 'L', 'U' or “O” shape. The distribution light guide () may have a “V” shaped or rectangular reflector () with opposed surfaces () to reflect light (L) from the LED () to face the reflector ().
