Abstract

The present invention provides a systemfor irradiating a breastof a patient. The systemcomprises a gantryrotatable about a horizontal axisand comprising a radiation sourcefor generating a radiation beamand a detectorspaced from the radiation source, and a barrierdisposed between the patientand the gantry. The barrieris provided with an openingadapted to allow a breastpassing therethrough to be exposed to the radiation beam. In some embodiments, the barrieris provided with an openingadapted to allow both the breastand the tissue leading from the breast to axilla and the muscle tissue of the adjacent chest wall passing therethrough to be exposed to the radiation beam
