Abstract
These are described biphenylene compounds of formula (I) wherein Ris a C-Calkyl, C-Calkenyl, C-Caryl or C-Caryl or C-Cheteroaryl radical each unsubstituted or mono- or poly-substituted by hydroxy, halogen, C-Calkyl, C-Calkoxy, amino, C-Cmonoalkyamino or by di-C-Calkylamino; C-Ccycloalkyl or C-Ccycloalkenyl each unsubstituted or substituted by C-Calkyl; —OR'; or NR′R″; Ris a C-Calkyl, C-Calkenyl, C-Caryl or C-Cheteroaryl radical each unsubstituted or mono- poly-substituted by hydroxy, hadroxy, C-Calkoxy, amino, C-Cmonoalkylamino or by di-C-Calkylamino; —OR′; —NR′R″; or Rand Rtogether form a 5- to 7- membered monocyclic carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring; Ris hydrogen; C-Calkyl or C-Calkoxy; R′ and R″ are each independently of the other hydrogen; unsubstituted or mono- or poly-hydroxy-, halo-, C-Calkyl-, C-Calkoxy-, amino- or quaternary ammonium groupsubstituted C-Calkyl, C-Ccycloalkyl or phenyl; and n is 0 or 1; wherein, when Ris OR′ or NR′R″ and n=1, Ris not simultaneously OR′; or NR′R″. The compounds according to the invention are suitable especially as sun protection agents in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and veterinary medicine preparations.
