Apparatus for providing optical radiation, which apparatus comprises an optical fibre () having a core (), a first cladding () and a second cladding (), in which the first cladding () has a substantially constant diameter () in its cross-section. The first cladding () can be non-circular. Advantages include more reliable cleaving, joining and splicing.
