Abstract
A tape cartridge () for use in a tape drive () having a tape head () includes a cartridge housing (), a cartridge reel () and a tape (). The cartridge reel () is rotatably secured to the cartridge housing (). The tape () is secured to the cartridge reel (). The tape () can include a storage tape (D) that stores data and a lapping tape (L) that laps the tape head (). In one embodiment, the storage tape (D) and the lapping tape (L) are spliced together. The ratio of storage tape (D) to lapping tape (L) can be at least approximately 0.01:1. The lapping tape (L) can include a diamond material having a grit of between approximately 0.1 micron and 1.0 micron. In one embodiment, the tape () can include a first lapping tape (L) and a second lapping tape (L) that has a different grit than the first lapping tape (L). In another embodiment, the tape () also includes a cleaning tape (CL) that cleans the tape head ().
