Abstract
The impedance of intracellular water (Z), height (H), weight (W), and age (A) of the subject are included as variables in an equation that estimates muscle mass (MM). Impedance of extracellular water (Z) is determined by a step of applying an alternating current to the body and measuring the resulting impedance. Impedance of total body water (Z) is determined by a step of applying a high frequency alternating current to the body and measuring the resulting impedance. Zis determined by calculating an inverse of the result of subtracting an inverse of measured Zfrom an inverse of measured Z. The equation for muscle mass is of the form: MM−aH/Z+bW+cA+d.
