Abstract
In a disk array system having a plurality of spare drives, the storage areas of which are not wasted without being influenced by the physical boundaries thereof. There is defined one large spare parity groupwhich is composed of a plurality of spare drives. . . , and so on. A spare logic drivehaving the same capacity as that of a faulty data driveB is cut out from a large spare logic driveprovided by the spare parity groupand the data of the faulty data driveB are copied to the cut spare logic driveA virtual physical drivecorresponding to the spare logic driveis defined and is incorporated instead of the faulty data driveB into a data parity groupA. As a result, data of the faulty data driveB are saved in the virtual physical drive(or the spare logic drive).
