Abstract
A recording-medium identification device has a light-emitting element for applying light on the recording medium and a detection element for detecting diffusely reflected light reflected in a backward direction, that is, a direction opposite to the direction in which the applied light is made incident, the diffusely reflected light being part of the applied light that is scattered and reflected on the recording medium.
