Abstract

Methods of storing and decrypting biometrics templates on a terminal network are described. A biometrics templateis encryptedusing a key, and the keyis then divided into a number of key shares. The encrypted template, a key share, and a user identifierare then combined to give an identification string. A number of stringsare then stored on separate terminalsof a terminal network. To decrypt the template, a user offers their identifierto a terminal. The required number of identification stringshaving that identifierare retrieved from their respective terminalson the network, and the key sharescombined to generate a keywhich is then used to decrypt the template. The decrypted templatemay then be used to verify the identity of the user. Using the present method, neither the unencrypted template nor the complete decryption key are transferred across the network, so improving security.
