Abstract

A separate read/write magnetic head of the present invention includes a magnetoresistive headhaving a magnetoresistive filmdisposed between a lower shieldand an upper shield, both of which are formed on a substrate, and a pair of electrodeselectrically connected to the magnetoresistive film; and an inductive magnetic thin film headhaving a coilbetween a lower pole pieceand an upper pole piece, both of which are disposed on the upper shieldof the magnetoresistive headwith a separation filmbeing sandwiched therebetween, and through a magnetic gap filmand an interlayer insulating film. Reduced protrusion of the read head element toward the air bearing surface due to heat deformation caused by changes in ambient temperature can be achieved by configuring the lower shieldand the upper shieldso that the sum of their thicknesses is 0.4 μm or more and less than 3.4 μm.
