A process for preparing 3-hydroxythiolane which is characterized in reacting a compound of the following formula, wherein X is halogen atom, and Ris substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group, substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group, or substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, with a metal sulfide.
