Abstract

An end portion of an optical fiber elementis dipped into an etchant to shape that portion of the fiber element immersed in said etchant into a coaxial reduced-diameter portion by etching while causing that portion of the fiber element where the etchant rising to a certain height above the level surface of the etchant due to surface tension into a conical tapered surface portion which is formed between the reduced-diameter portion and un-etched portion of the fiber element, and subsequently thereafter, the reduced-diameter portion is cut to have a very short length thereof remained.
