A method for operating an internal combustion engine is provided. By taking into account a setpoint temperature Tof the internal combustion engine which depends on external and internal boundary conditions when controlling and/or regulating temperature-dependent functions of the internal combustion engine, fuel consumption and emission characteristics of the internal combustion engine are improved.
