The present invention provides a semiconductor optical devicethat includes a photodiode capable of monitoring front light of the light-emitting device. The optical deviceincludes a photodiode, which is formed on a substrateand has an absorption layerand a semiconductor layer, and an optical waveguidealso formed on the substrate.
